There’s a new TV show in town, I’ve not seen it yet but I have read the book that it relates to, a couple of years ago and I did try out some of the techniques but they just didn’t work for me – everybody is different so it’s good to try new techniques and processes until you find the one that works for you and there’s no shame in admitting that something didn’t work; at least you had a go.
However, the concern I have with everybody getting on the decluttering bandwagon is what they do with the bags they fill. Here at Total Order Pro, I’m a big advocate of decluttering your space to help you live and breath better, but at what cost to the planet? When I’m decluttering for a client, I try and make sure that items are bagged up ready for a charity shop, or recycling centre (paper, cardboard plastic, glass) and bags of items that I need to think about. Some items might not be suitable to sell in a charity shop but are too good to dispose of such as crafting supplies, old duvets and pillows or out of date technology. Those are the things that end up in the corner of my garage waiting to be re-homed and whilst it might take a few days for me to come up with a solution, there is usually somebody somewhere that can upcycle almost anything.
So when you are having a clear out, don’t just automatically send everything to landfill, do have a think about how you can distribute ethically. Think about old bedding that could go to an animal shelter – Greyhounds love old pillows to play with and especially like to cozy up on a duvet during a cold evening.
Schools and play groups can use arts and craft materials. Glass jam jars and bottles can often be used by a local WI Group for making jam, pickle etc. Vintage clothing, including hats, could go to a community theatre group and the Air Ambulance Charity collects old mobile phones to recycle. Be sensible though, if something is way past its best, don’t just dump it on somebody else, some things do have to go to the tip but with a little thought, we could be sending far less to landfill.
