It’s that time of year again…coming up to summer and you’re beginning to think about lazy days sitting out in the garden, sipping iced drinks and enjoying BBQ lunches….she says hopefully looking up at the sky!
Well, if you’re like me, you will have a shed full of lovely outdoor things that come out every year for about two minutes while the sun’s out and then you clean them and carefully pack them away again, so they are ready for next year.
However, not everybody is as organised as you and me. Some people just chuck everything into the back of the shed and then come summer, the things they need are no longer able to be used. They’ve been nibbled at by mice, slugs have trailed their way across leaving a shiny road-map for their friends to use and everything is smelly, covered in dust, cobwebs and dead leaves. So before summer arrives, take half an hour to have a look at the damage. Can things be washed, painted, stitched to make them usable again? If the answer is no then probably the best thing to do is bag the items and take them to the local recycling centre and make a promise that this year you will break the habit of a lifetime and organise storage properly.
As you have now treated yourself to some new outdoor cushions, lights, throws and pink flamingos (Featherstone and Delilah delight me every time I go outside!), take some time now to think about storage because autumn creeps up on us every year!
If you don’t have a shed then I think there are a couple of options to think about:
Even if you have a shed, the plastic storage boxes are really useful because they can be stacked up on shelves, under tables or even neatly on the floor against a wall, as in the image here. They are quite versatile and keep things together and clean.
I know it’s a pain, the thought of spending time on doing jobs like this makes you lose the will to live, but really it is worth it.
So when it’s next April and we get a sudden three-day heatwave – you’ve put the effort in now so you’re ready to go. You can look smug while your neighbours are scraping the gunk off the BBQ and shouting at each other because they can’t find the cushions and the legs are wobbly on the outdoor seats.
